It's Noon Somewhere....Havana Special

Loyal readers of this blog (Hi K!) may know that I love rum, light, gold, dark or spiced. While whisky, tequila and gin have more devotees and craft cocktails created to honor them,  rum seems to be only for people who want Captain and Coke or a drink with an umbrella in it (not that there is anything wrong with a good tiki cocktail).  So here at Une Femme est Une Femme, I am spearheading the rum revolution.  And I am not the only one, recently, K and I went to Rumba, a newish rum bar in Seattle (loved it!) and also toured a rum distillery on our recent trip to New Orleans.

So, inspired by these recent experiences, I decided to play around with more than my usual rum cocktails (the rum sour, mojito and daiquiri) and try to create more elegant, flavorful and beautiful rum cocktails.  No more shall rum be relegated to the back of the cocktail pack!

Modified from one of K and my cocktail Bible's, The Ultimate Bar Book, the Havana Special is a twist on the Havana Sidecar which is a Sidecar with gold rum, the addition of the pineapple juice gives it an extra special twist and makes it a bit fruitier and adds a twist of tartness.  This is a beautiful cocktail for a sunny afternoon and it adds a bit of elegance to rum that I think is well deserved.

Havana Special:

1 oz gold rum
1 oz Triple Sec
1 oz fresh lime juice
1/2 oz pineapple juice

Mix all ingredients together in a cocktail shaker.  Serve in a martini glass.  For garnish you could do a lime twist, a pineapple wedge, or if you are feeling festive, a cocktail umbrella wouldn't be out of place.
